New Surface Lava !!! 5-19-17

New Surface Lava Reaches the Coastal Plain:

New surface lava flows have finally reached the coastal plain as of yesterday!

For the past month or so surface flows have been inching down the Pulama Pali from breakouts high along the tube system and just yesterday the tip of this very wide flow finally made it down to the coastal plain! Last night we watched a large bright river of lava descending all the way to the base of the pali, spilling onto the coastal plain below. We’ll be taking our guests to see this exciting new surface activity (as long as it lasts) on our popular Lava Bike and Hike Tours. Reserve your tour now because they’re going to fill up fast!

Where is the Active Lava?: As this most recent map and overlay below shows, all active lava flows (in bright red) are currently located within the boundaries of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and the closed Kahauale’a Natural Area Reserve, owned by the State. There is no active lava located on any private land at this time.

Where can you access the lava?

Kahauale’a NAR: The land around the Episode 61g vent on the flank of Pu’u ‘O’o Cone and the upper flow field is located within the State owned Kahauale’a Natural Area Reserve, which has been closed since 2007. There is no legal access into this area (privately or with a guide) due to significant hazards.

Private Land???: There is currently no active lava anywhere on private land.

If there were, you could only access it with explicit permission of the owner of the particular parcels of land where the lava flow would be located. You would also need permission for all the parcels of land you pass through. To avoid being a trespasser it’s important to be sure that anyone who claims to have permission to take you onto private land actually does, and that you’re really going through those particular pieces of land.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park: The lower part of the current lava flow is located within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park which does allow public access. You can take a guided tour into this area provided the company has a Commercial Use Authorization Permit issued by the national park, is insured and has proper licenses.

Lavaland Hawai’i has a current CUA permit, commercial insurance and a PUC number, which is required for all tour operators who transport passengers in any vehicle, and we can take you anywhere any other guide or tour company can legally take you.
